Newborn photography at the Bénédictins studio follows one non-negotiable rule: only parents handle their child. The photographer does not pose the baby, does not move them, does not reposition them. No basket. No swaddling. No props for positioning. This lifestyle approach produces truer images — those of a newborn sleeping, waking, feeding, gazing, in the arms of their family. This page explains why this stance has been held since the studio opened in 2008.
The principle — only parents handle their child
The photographer never touches the baby. No prefabricated poses, no artistic swaddling, no baby positioned in a basket or drape. Everything photographed happens naturally: a spontaneous cuddle, a feeding, a fall asleep against a parent's shoulder, an exchange of gazes, a tiny hand opening and closing. This stance produces calmer, truer images, and more importantly more respectful sessions for both baby and parents in the fragile days following birth.
Why lifestyle rather than posed
The swaddled baby in a basket is an aesthetic convention that requires handling the newborn, placing them in positions they did not choose, putting them in deep sleep to comply. The result is pretty but detached from what is actually lived in a family at birth. Lifestyle photography, conversely, documents what exists without staging it. No baby is disturbed. No parent feels dispossessed.
When to schedule
The window is not fixed. A lifestyle session works as well at J+7 as at J+20 or J+45 — each age offers a different atmosphere. In the first weeks, baby sleeps a lot, often photographed against a parent's chest. Around six weeks, real first smiles change the nature of the session. You choose the moment that suits you, with no narrow window pressure.
The flow
The session takes place at the Bénédictins studio or at your home, your choice. It is 30 effective minutes spread over 1 h 30 to 2 h to integrate feedings, changes, calm pauses. You hold your baby. You rock them. You feed them if it is the moment. We photograph what happens: portraits of baby in your arms, close-ups of hands, face, feet, exchanges of gazes between you, first cuddle with siblings.
Book during pregnancy
The lifestyle session is ideally booked during pregnancy, between months 6 and 8. You share the expected birth date. From birth, you call or write us; we schedule the session in the days or weeks that suit you, with no narrow-window pressure.
